We all make spontaneous hand movements, called gestures, when we talk. These cospeech gestures are produced in rhythm with our speech and are related to the meaning of what we are saying. For example, when talking about attending a piano recital, you might move your fingers right and left in front of you to illustrate what playing a piano looks like.

There are several different types of gestures that serve different purposes. Some gestures describe objects or actions, like the piano example above. These are called iconic gestures, because they create a picture. Sometimes our gestures do not make pictures, but they move in rhythm with our speech. These are called beat gestures, because they follow the beat of our speech. For example, you might flick both wrists downward when saying the word amazing in the following sentence: "The recital was amazing." These gestures can help the speaker emphasise certain words.

Hand gestures are not just hand waving. Gestures can also enhance learning in children who view and make them. Children's gestures reveal when they are on the cusp of understanding a new concept. An important unanswered question that scientists are still trying to figure out is how? How do gestures help learning? Even though we do not yet have an answer to this, scientists have some ideas. One possibility is that gestures offer a visual way to communicate ideas that can complement what children hear or say with spoken language. Instead of just hearing something in speech, children get to see it as well.

Another possibility is that gestures help children focus their attention on the most important points of what is being learned, at exactly the right time. Gestures increase the chance that the children will know exactly which part of the equation the teacher is talking about. Finally, it is also possible that gestures help memory by engaging more parts of the brain. Gesturing engages the motor parts of the brain in addition to the parts of the brain already active for producing language. Engagement of multiple brain areas may lead to better, deeper learning.

Gestures come along for free with our speech and can play a critical role in helping children learn. By continuing to study gestures, we will better understand how we can help children learn.

(1) Recently Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX made a giant step toward being the first moon tour provider by signing up his first passenger; the Japanese billionaire and entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa. If all goes according to plan, in 2023, Maezawa will become the first passenger and private astronaut to travel to the Moon. He will also join the elite group of just 2 dozen humans who have been fortunate enough to see Earth's satellite up close.
(2) Maezawa does not plan to take family or friends on this historic excursion. Instead, the former drummer from the punk rock band Switch Style, says, "I would like to invite six to eight artists from around the world to join me on this mission to the Moon. These artists will be asked to create something after they return to Earth, and these masterpieces will inspire the dreamer within all of us." Though the guest list has not been determined, he indicated they would be of the same caliber as geniuses, such as Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Michael Jackson, Coco Chanel, and John Lennon. "These are all artists that I adore, but sadly are no longer with us."
(3) The mission, entitled #dearMoon, will be conducted in a Big Falcon Rocket (BFR). First announced by Musk in 2016, the reusable spacecraft, which is still in the early stages of development, is being designed such that it can be refueled both on Earth and in space. Standing 387 feet tall, its 31 main engines, fueled by liquid oxygen and methane, will provide 5,400 tons of thrust and be capable of carrying a payload of over 100 metric tons to low-Earth orbit.
(4) Though the details of the week-long mission have not been finalised, Musk expects the spacecraft to skim past the lunar surface, fly beyond it, and then pass close to the Moon again before heading back to Earth.

Europe's first underwater restaurant is set to open in southern Norway. At the moment, it is still in the final stages of design but the images released by the Swedish architectural firm are intriguing. The restaurant is going to be called ‘Under' and it will be found five metres below the sea surface. Its structure is half submerged, so you enter on dry land and then descend to the underwater depths. However, it will look like it's accidentally underwater due to its angle, almost like a huge block that has washed up on the rocks. Or, if it were not so rectangular, it might resemble a beached whale. It will be spacious and able to host 100 diners spread over three floors. There will be large panoramic windows made of acrylic that look out into the deep blue. The walls and windows are going to be very thick to prevent leakage or damage from rough seas in bad weather. The rooms will be painted with deep blues and greens to resemble the colour of the sea outside.
It is hoped that, by using concrete on the building's exterior, sea creatures will be attracted to make the surface their home. In addition, when the restaurant is not serving guests, it will be a centre for scientific oceanographic research. The plan is to use it as a base from which scientists can take measurements of sea conditions and monitor sea creatures and their habitats.
However, when it comes to dining under the sea, Europe is behind the rest of the world. ‘Ithaa' is found in the Maldives and offers a very different underwater experience to that which is expected in Norway. Here, the waters are warm and clear, and the restaurant is surrounded by coral reef and tropical fish. Customers enjoy fresh seafood of the highest quality while sitting in an ingeniously designed transparent tube. In actual fact, this is not the only restaurant like this in the Maldives, there are many more, similarly spectacular, underwater restaurants to visit there.
There are also other places where it is possible to eat in underwater environments. Most of these are however artificial aquariums or ponds that surround the dining room. For example, in Dubai, there is a restaurant with a huge fish tank at its centre that makes customers feel as though they are under the sea. It is filled with 990,000 cubic litres of seawater and lots and lots of beautiful fish.
The design of these underwater marvels and feats of modern engineering is varied. The Norwegian addition is set to be modern and minimalist. The restaurant in Dubai could not contrast more as it is ostentatious and ornate. Those in the Maldives, are simplistic and as such are of a style more similar to Under. However, due to the nature of the sea in which they are placed, they differ greatly in atmosphere to that expected in Norway. With temperatures that are cold and sometimes subzero, and weather that is far from mild, Under could make for a very dramatic eating experience. As work has not started on it yet, an opening date has not been confirmed but it is likely to have a long waiting list for a table. Let's just hope that the food is as innovative as the building design.
